During ancient times currency took varied forms, including beaver skins, bales of tobacco, and sea salt blocks. As art and technology advanced, monetary systems and currencies altered. Today, coins and currency provide an historical and archeological record of culture, religion, politics, and world leaders. This updated second edition offers numerous entries of historical commentary on the role of coins and currency in human events, politics, and the arts. It begins with the origin of coins in ancient Sumer, and follows advancements in metallurgy and minting machines to paper, plastic, and electronic moneys designed to ease trade and halt counterfeiting and other forms of theft. A timeline of monetary history is provided along with a glossary and bibliography. Numerous photographs of coins and bills provide an up-close look at beautiful and ingenious artifacts.

While money is used as a medium of exchange, physical representations of money also carry with them symbols of their societies. This work aims to capture the various aspects of currency, from types of currency and descriptions of coins to the role of currency in shipwrecks and piracy. The book is aimed at the nonspecialist and is not meant for collectors. History buffs, trivia enthusiasts, and those with a general interest in currency will find this a useful reference. Like the first edition (2003), the heavily cross-referenced entries are alphabetically arranged, and each entry lists its source material. New entries (such as ATM, bitcoins, and platinum coins) have been added. Substantively, the second edition of Coins and Currency has retained many of the unique features and entries (such as its international flair, coin mottos and their translation, money slang, and counterfeits) that endeared the work to its readers. Well suited for a general reference collection.(Reprinted with permission of Booklist, copyright 2019, American Library Association.)
